I am due to excise two deep sitting broadbean-sized scrotal abscesses in two Guinea Pigs I castrated with a colleague 3-4 weeks earlier.
I already removed two from another animal. I excised a thick capsule as much as could, and I

RE: Guinea pig castrations

The penis doesn’t get in the way. Incision is just caudal to the umbilicus. Hopefully that webinar I sent you the link too helps. It’s normally a faecal contaminant that causes the issue because of where the wounds are in relation to the anus which is one of the reasons the abdominal technique is preferable. It’s further away etc

RE: Guinea pig castrations

Thank you very much for the comments and advice! The two caseous abscesses harvested Prevotella heparinolytica, but I wish I swabbed the first bilateral abscess which was different (huge, liquid, similar to cat bite abscess). Preveotella sounds like originating from the faecal contamination (?)

Noticed on the original forum going 10 odd years back with much interest Marie Kubiak’s abdominal technique, and I would like to try it next time, but I’m worried about the position of the penis. Would it not be on the way of the incision?

Thank you

RE: Guinea pig castrations

only using antibiotics if sterility broken (obvs avoided at all costs) or if cultures suggest it, nothing pre-operative from any routine neutering

RE: Guinea pig castrations

I agree with Glenn, abdominal castration all the way, incase its helpful (https://justexotics.co.uk/course/view.php?id=253)

I also agree at avoiding marsupialisation in this area, did you take an samples for culture by chance?

RE: Guinea pig castrations

Hi Benjamin.

I had one of these earlier in the year. Ironically ancessated around biosyn ligature following a caudal abdiminal castrate. ( if you're not using this technique have a look at it. I find it faster, easier and seems... Likely to have a lower abscess risk.)

I'd be canny about marsupialising. Small risk herniation, really dirty arou d there and not as effective as en bloc excision.

My one, I cultured, 4 weeks ab;s which shrunk it right down, then en bloc excision (very deep, almost into abdomen) using only 1 x 1.5 M caprosyn suture to close and surgical glue for the skin, minimising foreign material. Then 3 weeks more ab:s.

I ponder moving from biosyn to caprosyn for ligating.

Also, does anyone use ab's pre op in guinea castrate!? I don't and don't thing I will, however did think about it.

RE: Guinea pig castrations

Hi Arlo, many thanks for your help!
