Perhaps is more like the stuff you get with a bit of plant material or whatever in there than with a cat bite type abscess that is normally much more thick than watery? Lovely xrays. I'd probably put a drop on a slide and have a look to confrim that is wbcs +/- bacteria, and if wbcs is it mainly neutrohpils with loads of bacteria or mix of neutropihlsa and macrophages with few bacteria (I'd think more something stuck in there if so). If the former, then I'd lance and flush and put on amoxicillin like a more classic abscess, it the latter, then I'd surgically explore. nothing wrong with lancing and flushing and giving couple of weeks amoxicillin in first instance as Michael suggests can always come back to it if not resolved. If leaving to drain, then, depending on what was like once drained and flushed, I'd even consider a 6mm punch biopsy to ensure keeps draining well and heals from the inside hopefully rather than crusting over a stab incision and sealing on the outside before sorted on the inside.

RE: Lesion on lateral abdominal flank of cat

The material you have aspirated looks purulent to me, but I will take your word for it if it didn’t look that way in person (can’t really assess texture etc from the photo!). Could you do some in house cytology of the fluid to see what’s in there? If it is pus it will be mostly neutrophils and bacteria. If not, then it may give you some other clues?

RE: Lesion on lateral abdominal flank of cat

I have treated literally thousands of abscessses, but have never seen one like this before.
