Your client has my sympathies. Unfortunately this is something I have seen more and more from "rescues" recently, and I'm not sure why!

I used to credit rescues with more knowledge and practicality than the average pet owner, but cases like this keep showing up! I understand the sentiment over dogs (especially puppies!) like this, but surely people who have spent any time caring for animals would understand the ramifications and practicalities of this?

Thanks all, just feel very bad for the client who is lovely and has had a terrible year loosing all 3 of her previous dogs, none of them in old age! And now this is the situation she has ended up with.

I am really sorry Clare but this is a pts. surgery is unlikely to correct the neurological changes. the oronasal changes can be surgically corrected but on welfare grounds best to let go. so sorry

I would have no hesitation in advising euthanasia. Surely no-one could dispute that these deformities will/would have a major effect on any quality of life for the pup? One can speculate on the major potential susceptibility to dental disease, respiratory issues, even skin disease around the head but does the dog have any exercise tolerance at the moment due to the reduction in respiratory abilities? I do not believe that such extensive surgery could be justified! Excessive pain, doubtful long-term benefits and hard to justify the likely cost! Good luck with finding the correct solution!

Corrective surgery sufficient to improve prehension should be possible, but by no means minor – and really, given everything else that'swrong, should it be done?

I'm for either returning it to the "rescue" people (accompanied by a robust opinion ) or euthanasia. Euthanasia probably the better option.

Thank you both, this is my feeling. I am just really cross that the rescue have given her this pup only 2 weeks ago. And are less than helpful.

I'm another for PTS I'm afraid.

Without referral level imaging and possible corrective surgery (It may not even be possible, I don't know), the prognosis has to be guarded, and what quality of life does or will this puppy have?

My initial thoughts is euthansia on welfare grounds especially if mentally affected
