Hi, this 6.5month old doggy was shown to me last week by one of my colleagues. The owner has been trying ball therapy but the tips of 304/404 look too caudal to slip rostral to 104/204. There are no depressions in the hard palate from the canines yet

RE: Lingually displaced permanent canines

Makes perfect sense.
I'd want to wait until it's fully erupted, so that I can see by how much it needs to be shortened.

RE: Lingually displaced permanent canines

Thanks Evelyn, I will ask my colleague to discuss options with the owner.

I send a link to your page to owners on at least 5-6 x a year, even showing them the images of the deciduous teeth on my computer terminal.

I haven’t scrolled down past the deciduous section for possibly a couple of years so hadn’t realised just how comprehensive the information was for adult teeth.

it’s a fantastic resource and I hope my absent mindedness has at least prompted others to take a look.

RE: Lingually displaced permanent canines
I’d be interested to hear if you see LDC in permanent teeth without it being present in the deciduous canines
Yes, certainly.
I’m interested in options for cases like this
There are two options: tooth shortening and orthodontic movement.

It's the owner's choice. I can do either but I always advocate tooth shortening.and funnily enough owners always agree.

Tooth shortening: a couple of hours, done and dusted, bish bash bosh. Check radiographs under moderate sedation two months and six months later.

Orthodontic movement takes weeks and weeks, may need lots of revisits, gets expensive, subjects dog possibly to distress or pain of having device glued in mouth.

In the case in the photo, the orthodontic movement required is quite complex, with three components: enlarging the space 103-4 and 203-4; moving 304 and 404 rostrally; angling 304 and 404 labially.

I'm not sure from the photos, but I rather think this dog is mildly overshot. One of the possible causes of lingual diversion of canines occurring.

Make sure they don't breed from it.

RE: Lingually displaced permanent canines

Try this for info. www.dentalvets.co.uk/.../lingually-displaced-canines
