Given the more recent EMA classification (with amoxicillin-clavulanate in a higher tier than amoxicillin), I would anticipate that there will be a move to encourage use of narrow spectrum options wherever possible. Currently 98% of amoxicillin used in the UK is combined with clavulanic acid!!

We do have a current project - SOS UTI that uses amoxicillin-clavulanate for management of UTIs in dogs (trying to establish the shortest effective duration). Please get involved to help us answer this question before we all move over to using amoxicillin instead!!

Certainly gets me thinking at times; how far have we really come? genuine question.

My first job in 1996, it was a thermometer, a stethoscope, a big pot of preds (pre Atopic, pre Apoquel, pre cytopoint, pre anything else really), and another of ampicillin, and off you go - not forgetting a thorough clinical examination of course - there was no gold standard mantra BS, and no cascade nonsense - funnily enough most things did ok and got better without £100's or even £1000's of tests and investigations.

RE: Antibiotic guidelines survey
I like amoxycillin first line, but most practices don't stock it.
