So far have used it on >20 cats and the only side effect noted so far was the one cat where it didn't work.

Have you reported these? The SPC/data sheet statistic is only based on the few hundred cats that will have received the drug in pre-marketing trials. Even if the adverse effect is already in the data sheet, reporting helps to develop knowledge about the effect - frequency/whether some animals are more susceptible than others.

From the data sheet: "Oclacitinib modulates the immune system and may increase susceptibility to infection and exacerbate neoplastic conditions."

While that sounds mainly like self-preservation ("we don't know but theoretically it's possible, so we better warn"), the first dog I ever saw on Apoquel developed (or showed) lymphoma shortly after Apoquel being started. I obviously can't say if there was a causal link or just co-incidence (data sheet states been reported very rarely), if there is malignancy or undiagnosed lumps, I rather err on the side of caution and I at least warn owners it might make the condition worse quickly.

It also frequently causes non-specific skin lumps according to the data sheet, again only seen it once so far.

I agree, Solensia is more tricky, especially as it's not been on the market that long. I still normally wouldn't use it as a first line treatment, but certainly would consider it if acupuncture and meloxicam don't work/ have too many side effects. My biggest question mark is still this: "Statistically significant difference (p<0.05) compared to placebo-treatment was demonstrated after the first and second treatment, but not after the third treatment." (from datasheet). If the manufacturer doesn't notice a statistical advantage after 3 treatments, it makes me wonder how much care giver placebo effect goes into long term use.

Had one cat that deteriorated shortly after Solensia injection and died the following evening. Owner quiet convinced it was Solensia. I rather think it was the suspected liver tumour (definite mass in cranial abdomen) and/ or the poorly controlled renal failure, but likely failed to convince the owner. ;-)

I'd disagree with apoquel. In use for 10 years?

I have locummed in practices that do blood sample every 6 months looking for changes to haematology. As far as I'm aware nothing found

With Solensia, it's tricky, but for our cat, he's having the time of his life. He runs up the stairs and ran through the garden like a deer the other day. Cats lives are finite, by the time we get to them with these products they have maybe 2-3 years left on the clock. Far better a great quality of life for 6 months than in discomfort in my opinion.

However we lost our other cat to an abdominal tumour last year, we still miss him, so condolences

My cat also got hair loss around ears and around mouth. Unfortunately also got a really severe rapidly growing abdominal mass. She had 6 months of treatment. There has been some discussion about whether the ‘biological s’ are involved in cancer development and on the human side, they believe there is. So perhaps we need to be a bit more wary of apoquel, cytopoint, librela and solensia
