&lt;p&gt;The best method. And it doesn&amp;#39;t have to be a cotton bud. A smooth metal or plastic probe will do.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A vasectomised tom would be even better, but I don&amp;#39;t think I&amp;#39;ve ever heard of anybody keeping one.&lt;/p&gt;

It&amp;#39;s an uncommon question. I recall a cat being put on Ovarid long term by a colleague which got a pyo when they stopped giving it. I don&amp;#39;t think it&amp;#39;s a good option if you can even get it, with all the side effects and contraindications.
