I have long commented that although our veterinary degree is very thorough sand covers no end of exotic diseases, it struck me very soon after joininhg practice that there was, maybe still is a HUGE hole in the curriculum. Not once at Liverpool in five years were behavioural problems discussed in any shape or for,. So we all went out into practice with no ireal dea of thre correct professional advice for the variety of common issues that we hear of and experience! The person whodeserves the credit for highlighting behavioural issues both to the profession and the general public was Doctor Roger Mugford. I made a point of studying his writings and articles to educate myself. He might have been a bit too simplistic in his explanations but at least now we had omethoughtful advice to offer? Any comments on this from anyone please?

Thanks in advance...

I might start a tangential thread on this? I personally don't think the implant will do much - but even if it does, the owner needs to address their issues. If they are avoiding certain situations that would indicate to me that they are likely to become defensive and anxious when they inevitably meet unknown dogs - and this will certainly be picked up by their dog.

RE: Aggression towards male entire dogs - any joy with suprelorin implant?

I agree with Janine. When I used Tardak for this, or even oestradiol, I viewed as a trial before the irreversible step of castration. But the older the dog, the less effective any of these seemed to be. Good luck with your case here! It may well be that behavioural re-education should have been emphasised at the same time, probably!!

RE: Aggression towards male entire dogs - any joy with suprelorin implant?

The implant gives you a window of opportunity to retrain behaviours so best given in association with someone who can assist with retraining the dog to behave appropriately in the presence of entire make dogs . It will help if the testosterone levels are priming the behaviour , if it is showing aggressive behaviour due to insecurity issues the implant may worsen the behaviour . In some cases the lack of testosterone allows other entire males to behave inappropriately towards the chemically castrated dog . The owner needs to ensure the dog is under control and rewarded for ignoring all other dogs especially entire males until the level of arousal in the presence of other dogs has settled .
