If I recall correctly its a dropper bottle and this is the dose per volume given in the data sheet - it tends to be administered by drops.

I guess I would use sterile water and discard any unused immediately as not sure re stability.

Not sure I'm afraid - if you are struggling you could call the pharmacy team at Willows as they would know. It could be there is an availability issue...

Personally I don't use oral calcium but some people do. I just give IV calcium to manage acute hypocalcaemia when clinical.

Wow, thanks for such a quick reply! So what do you take as a drop volume? If you dilute, do you just use water? Do you know where you source if from as we are struggling to get hold of the liquid at the moment? Do you also start oral calcium and if so what form?

Hi Rob,

It is in the newest edition of the formulary - it gives a dose of up to 0.03 ug (micrograms) per kg per day - I tend to use that divided but often end up increasing. However - the smallest dose you can give reasonably is one drop which equates to 0.1 micrograms of the one alpha liquid. So for a 3-4Kg cat one drop a day would be at the top of that starting range unless you dilute.

Hi Andy, what dose of alphcalcidol do you use? Cat with post bilateral thyroidectomy hypercalcaemia, no dose in BSAVA formulary. I think you previously mentioned 15ug/kg BID in another thread, which by my calculations equates to 0.0375ml for a 5kg cat. This sounds like a very tiny volume to give accurately, or has my sleep deprived brain missed a decimal point somewhere....

I don't know - it was ordered from their normal wholesaler but I'm not back at that practice until next week, and it was for someone else's case where the clients were really struggling with the capsules. I'll let you know....

Did you manage to get AT-10? I was under the impression it had been discontinued.

We now use alfacalcidol (one-alpha) when liquid formulation is required.

I've used one-alpha drops in the past (2011!) for my own cat. Did have to divide the drop for the dose she needed. Ended up drawing it up in an insulin syringe and putting it inside a dreamy!
