We're reviewing our neutering protocols at work and one aspect is when to spay with regard to timing of bitch's cycle and spaying when in false pregnancy. (vetsurgeon.org)

I think there may be a division to be made between

1) during lactation at time of cesarean in pregnant bitch (I can't see a problem other than seems to require a lot of clamps and may prolong the GA in a potentially compromised bitch; I do very few cesareans, so can't comment from experience)

2) during the progesterone phase in the non-pregnant bitch.(might cause more obvious signs of lactation than might otherwise have seen - treat with cabergoline if does and deemed necessary)

3) during oestrus - might be more likely to leave a bit of ovarian tissue behind

4) anestrus (either pre-pubertally, or between cycles with pros and cons of each to be discussed in a different thread!) - surely the best general rule all things being equal, but not a reason to avoid spaying at other times if reason to.

RE: Persistent/chronic pseudopregnancy -does it exist?!

I will spay a bitch literally at any point in the cycle and I've experienced no difference.
Facts (I'm sounding like a dinovet)

1) Vets spay bitches loaded with milk at the same time as caesarians

2) I have never seen a persistently lactating bitch

I feel really sorry for this poor clients dealing with bitches who constantly have false pregnancies because no-one will spay them, because by the time they are finished they are in season again and the whole cycle repeats.
