When the dog came from Romania the charity did a test and she was 'negative' for Leishmania, but I don

RE: Use of oclacitinib or prednisolone in dog with low Leishmania titre

I did offer a cytopoint injection, but the owner is going with trying antihistamines, and some douxo calm, while we wait to see if it settles now that we've killed off (hopefully) the demodex.

Would it be better to consider an injection of Cytopoint?

RE: Use of oclacitinib or prednisolone in dog with low Leishmania titre

From the datasheet:

Oclacitinib modulates the immune system and may increase susceptibility to infection and exacerbate neoplastic conditions. Dogs receiving Apoquel tablets should therefore be monitored periodically with complete blood counts and serum biochemistry when on long-term treatment.

When treating pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis with oclacitinib, investigate and treat any underlying causes (e.g. flea allergic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, food hypersensitivity). Furthermore, in cases of allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis, it is recommended to investigate and treat complicating factors, such as bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections/infestations (e.g. flea and mange).

Not sure it would be advisable in a possible leishmania case.

RE: Use of oclacitinib or prednisolone in dog with low Leishmania titre

I would have thought oclacitinib potentially slightly preferable as I believe it does not have an immunosuppressive action (though also would not expect significant immunosuppression with a short course of pred at anti-pruritic doses)?

Worth a chat with the technical team at zoetis first though. I don't know where you are based but I believe Emi Barker at Langford has an interest in Leish and may be happy to advise?

(and take my advice with a huge pinch of salt as I'm post-GA myself and scrolling VetSurgeon as I can't sleep!)

RE: Use of oclacitinib or prednisolone in dog with low Leishmania titre
