It is virtually impossible to source meloxicam formulations for cats. This poses a problem for patients requiring medium to long term pain management. Certainly appreciate any suggestions on

RE: Pain Management in cats

Correct, off license use so get informed off license consent and probably should use Onsir in preference but I would rather the cat actually got the pain killer.

RE: Pain Management in cats

Unfortunately Onsior is not available in NZ. Among several of the drugs I miss from UK days....

My clinic can still get the 15ml and 30ml bottles, not the 3ml ones though. I think decanting some of the canine stuff would be the best alternative at present. There is a veterinary compounding service, but that can start getting quite costly.

RE: Pain Management in cats
Sarah Keir said:

We are using dog formulations of meloxicam and working out the correct cat dose/volume.

This. It's a lot cheaper too.
I do this too, certainly for ongoing cases

But (in UK);

From datasheet: This product for dogs should not be used in cats as it is not suitable for use in this species. In cats, Metacam 0.5 mg/ml oral suspension for cats should be used.

So would this technically be off label use and in contravention of cascade regs?

Should we get off label consent?

Should we use licenced alternatives if available, such as Onsior?

It doesn't worry me particularly, but maybe another example of an anomaly within the cascade, and it getting in the way of good clinical practice.

RE: Pain Management in cats
We are using dog formulations of meloxicam and working out the correct cat dose/volume.
