There is little logic in a three week detention especially now we know puppies are crossing from Russia into EU countries before starting the long journey to the UK.

I am unclear what the rabies risk is in Russia!

I don’t fully understand the reasons to be honest. Maybe it’s a compromise because 6 months for every puppy illegally imported would be not practical. The flow chart above states 21 days but I have asked tradings standards myself. I was off when they actually came for the paperwork and took the pup.

why 3 weeks?

I know 3 weeks have to lapse following rabies vaccination before travel. Will the puppy travel back to Europe at some point?

But, if there is a genuine concern that there is a possibility, however remote, the puppy could have rabies, surely it should be quarantined for 6 months? or euthanased?

Trading standards have seized the puppy for 3 weeks. It seems like they are being quite proactive.

As the incubation period for rabies was considered up to six months (hence quarantine rules) probably little point but the puppy is compliant with the rules after the wait.

New owners may well need to find out the hard way that buying dodgy puppies comes with an additional price tag!

Now it's in the UK what would be the point of giving it a rabies vaccination?

I did tell them about the discrepancy between the vaccination card which put the puppy at 9 weeks and the passport which out the puppy at 18 weeks . Both had the same microchip details on them ! I said I would need to contact the authorities if it was nine weeks old . They phoned the receptionist to confirm the breeder had said definitely 9 weeks . I then contacted trading standards. As I wasn’t sure what would happen I had said it had not happened before and I didn’t know the procedures. Clients very unhappy when authorities arrived and took puppy away and I don’t know what has happened since . I think they are liable for kennel fees so pup may end up being kennelled for three weeks till it can have rabies vaccine and then a further three weeks . Not good for puppy at all but better than importing rabies and I hope they get the importers too

Yes that’s the tricky part - I was concerned about assessing the age. I suppose the fact that the owner was sold the pup as 9 weeks is suspicious enough. I didn’t have anyone else to ask at the time. Did you ask the owner’s permission to report it or just did you just tell them you were reporting it?

Hi bibs , that was exactly the tail for the dog I reported to trading standards which was a dachshund. The new owners were sold it as a nine week old puppy . The passport said it was 18 weeks old .i asked the new owners to confirm the age as nine weeks which they did . Passed it to trading standards who have taken on the puppy and I presume trying to track the rest of the litter . I presume this is widespread as I am not sure if the younger members of my team would pick up on it. I went round the practice asking everyone how old they thought they puppy was .

Yes I agree and will follow this up for sure. I just didn't understand the issue with the chip - the owner said they tried to register their details but couldn't because the number didn't already exist in the system. Is this a thing?

My view is any discrepancy should be reported. There appears to be widespread abuse of the system resulting in disease risk, welfare risk and emotional and financial risk to owner.

PetLog and identibase were happy to register foreign chips for a fee!
