I have a dog booked in this afternoon for a suprelorin implant and its years since I did one. Do people usually sedate first or not? Any top tips?

Seemed to work fine! My only slight dilemma was- if we are avoiding castration to avoid joint/ bone problems in these big guys, does the implant similarly affect growth factors etc??

RE: Suprelorin implant

Checked with Virbac-not available in Oz. Sledgehammer it is then-but even a sledgehammer can be used thoughfully and in a measured manner-which is how all of the vets here I know using it have used Suprelorin and in doing so brought great relief from PH- which I gather is a pretty horrendous and quality of life altering problem in males

RE: Suprelorin implant

Interesting. Ypozane just has not taken off here-it does have good merits as you point out but is just not a commonly used medication here -countries just differ in their approach to different diseases etc for lots of reasons, not least for small remote populations not making it worth while having the meds. We lost once daily liquid thyroxine here in Australia as demand not worth having it here. Suprelorin is an Aussie product so no supply issues. The good point about using Suprelorin in really old dogs is any issues of fear etc well known by then to owners so all we have had is much better temperment and behaviour. after it. I do avoid using Suprelorin in breeding animals where at all possible-most cases now I would refuse but again really old dogs still as stud dogs not so common. If the dog was young enough to need suprelorin or even Ypozane then castration would move up my list rather than drugs as not a dog we would want bred from anyway. What is your criteria for using Ypozane and what caveats do you have about the when and the why you use it?

RE: Suprelorin implant
However, to be able to use it for the first week in a severely affected BPH patient to cover until the Suprelorin kicks in would be of merit.
I'm not sure you understand how Ypozane works. It is only a week's course, which then treats the BPH for 5-6 months. It is a lot cheaper, and more specific, than treating with Suprelorin. Sledgehammers and nuts springs to mind. Certainly preferable if you want to avoid decreasing testosterone - in breeding dog or behavioural problemns (fear aggression etc) I would've thought.

RE: Suprelorin implant

10-12 year old Giant breed dogs with comorbidities don't make the best surgical candidates esp when twinned with an owner who was too conflicted it to castrate it when young and healthy let alone now. Often the temperment not good either so nice not to have to struggle with them post op as no wound to worry about etc. The implant takes secs to do and really has been wonderful in these patients.

RE: Suprelorin implant

20-04-18-52kg dog, 14-05-2019 54 kg (went to 62 kg 3 months later when staying with in-laws), 13-05/2020 Suprelorin implants redo when owner notices slight suggestion symptoms returning and testicles increasing back in size. Has been superb for the BPH-we used to use Tardak in the first week to get cover until the implant kicked in but most oral 'hormonal' meds oral or injectable have become impossible to get in Australia. Ypozane probably hasn't taken off here for that reason. It appears to have significant glucocorticoid activity so have you seen any issue with dogs on it and say also an NSAID re gastric issues etc. No mammary developement with Suprelorin as with Ypozane, forrmer used as co-treatment for some mammary neoplasias so that would be a concern for me. However, to be able to use it for the first week in a severely affected BPH patient to cover until the Suprelorin kicks in would be of merit.

RE: Suprelorin implant

The implant starts to wear off so its gone by 6months-hence 5mths reappearance not such a concern. It takes 4 weeks to really kick in then wears off in last 4 weeks. They don't have any data as no dogs in that size in the trial but that doesn't mean it stops given the manner of the feedback mechanism it operates on-. A bit like vaccination-it is not size determinant. Now we use the yearly one as standard. Not much dearer to client and no waste as comes in a single box with its own applicator. The client pays for it and we order it in. The good part of your 6 month one is you and client both know it worked-so either dog now castrated or give the one yearly.

RE: Suprelorin implant
Aine Seavers said:

We mostly give it to the >40kg big old dogs for prostatic issues and it works a treat.

Have been using it for many years, never seen that. We mostly give it to the >40kg big old dogs for prostatic issues and it works a treat. Within 4 weeks testicles visibly smaller. 6mth lasts for 4mth-1yr depending on dog and smaller dogs seem to throw it off faster-or the current wafer technology used to suspend it. Breeding males may remain permanently sterile so we never use it in an unproven stud dog and even then, reluctant to use it in a dog intended for breeeding.

RE: Suprelorin implant

Remember there is an increase in testosterone for a couple of weeks before the levels drop , and it’s only been proven effective for dog skin under 35kg

RE: Suprelorin implant

Thanks everyone.
