What is the current thinking on this?
Many thanks!

RE: Muzzle Folliculitis and Furunculosis (Canine Chin "Acne") - what's the current thinking?

Hi,

These are a pain to deal with. Despite all the modern parasiticides, its still mandatory to look for Demodex due to age and associated immature immune response of the patient, and the relationship between pydoderma and demodicosis It is a challenging area to scrape and find Demodex, especially if they have been partially treated. Dermatophytosis is on the list, as is Malassezia though probably secondary.Cytology of pustules or ooze expressed on scraping useful for microorganisms. Some have already been complicated by the various potions that the owners have applied before presentation. Many more mild cases respond to topical antibacterial washes. I avoid glucocorticoids orally or systemically in the early stages. A few may require and respond very well to a short appropriate course of systemic antibacterials. Some resolve ? spontaneously as they mature and some develop into chronic pyoderma that demand thorough investigation of underlying causes (other than being a young short nosed dog) and more aggressive treatment. Not sure how helpful that is but hopefully will stimulate discussion.
