Practising in Leicestershire I can count the number of cases I’ve seen in 38 years on the fingers of one hand! [/quote]

Blimey youhave my respect! What on earth happened? How do you cope with operations with just your two fingers? You must be very adept with the other hand to compensate! I guess that ambidextrous rectal PDs are right out with that difficulty?

But my serious reply is...: Here in Lincolnshire we see a lot of the creatures. Including my own cat every August or September. Fipronil spot-on was never effective as treatment nor as prevention. I would use a flea comb to groom the clumps out and then treat the residual intense inflammatory patches let behind. Topical steroids if I had some at home otherwise injectables from my car boot. .

Do they cause a true hypersensitivity lesion or just a simple inflammatory response? I find it hard to believe that all of the victims have a genuine hypersensitivity reaction. Any thoughts?

David, you are lucky. Do not feel disappointed at not seeing them. We see them a lot here in Lincolnshire, especially in my own cat a few years ago! They do seem to be it intensely pruritic and I used a flea comb to physically remove the when possible. That was relatively easy in my super-docile and patient cat. As for the antiparasitic angle, I thought Frontline disappointing. Especially the spot-on. Even soaking the little blighters with the spray seemed to not be very helpful!

Seleen was useful in dogs. But I am not sure how easy owners find it to shampoo their cat! Not very is the short answer.

I usually resorted to shot term steroids to treat the intense local patches of dermatitis where the mites had congregated.

RE: Lime sulphur - dogs/cats - uk

I feel like I’ve missed out!
