asking for a colleague.
9 month old Yorkshire terrier fed on hills vet essentials and no treats was presented for bad breath. My colleague found really bad teeth at such a young age. Would you consider this just breed predisposition or is

RE: 9 month old puppy with bad teeth
re Yorjies not prone to severe dental disease at the best of times ?
Absolutely, as are most tiny dogs. The teeth are proportionally larger than in larger dogs so there is a large surface area on which plaque can form. The roots take up a larger proportion of the jaws, so alveolar bone loss becomes much more significant with the risk or pathological fractures.

All the more reason to be addressing this dog's issues as soon as possible while the changes are hopefully reversible and steps can be put in place to avoid future problems.

RE: 9 month old puppy with bad teeth

A re Yorkies not prone to severe dental disease at the best of times ? This alone tells us very little about the health of the teeth as calculus is generally not pathogenic in itself. It does however suggest that plaque has been accumulating quickly which needs addressing. The first step has to be a full assessment under GA including probing around all the teeth. Hopefully all you have at present is plaque / calculus accumulation with gingivitis in which case thorough scaling and polishing followed by homecare and monitoring would be sufficient.

RE: 9 month old puppy with bad teeth

Everything starts with a chart followed by scale and polish
