They were looking v poorly, were still feeding but miserable.

I am always a bit nervous about rushing to the roids in puppies but they have done very well so far.

cheers

I had tried various antibiotics for the presumed Staph infection to little avail. But followingD.I.Grant's book, Skin Diseases of the Dog and Cat , my skin-bible when I discovered this book, my cases responded vastly better via the use of Prednisolone 2mg/kg daily together with appropriate antibiosis. Personally though I would also watch out for demodicosis. A serious threat for a puppy on steroids.

By the way, is the puppy sick? some seem extremely poorly with tis condition. General supportive treatment as appropriate to help the puppy cope.

Thank you Mr Grant!!

Good luck Chris...

RE: ?puppy stangles
I have already covered with antibiotics anyway but now started 1mg/kg pred.
Go higher. I'd start on 2mg/kg minimum with rounding up of the dose based on tablets.

RE: ?puppy stangles

interesting thing was that when i was seeing those one on the other vets also saw a 4 week old pup with facial swelling eyelid swelling and some pustules no pyrexia.. as said the ones that I have seen before have all had skin lesions, had one a few months ago. Just thought is was a slightly odd presentation. hopefully they respond to preds!

RE: ?puppy stangles

Saw a litter just the same last weekend Chris, approx 17d old collie crosses. Submand ln enlargement or, in 2 pups, abscess, not pyrexic, no skin lesions. Also a bulldog pup this week, same: submand abscess, not pyrexic, no skin lesions. Odd. I thought strangles too. Anyone been seeing a few? I can barely remember seeing any in a decade before this week. Had another look at them this evening and the swellings are bigger and likely to burst soon, only 4 pups seems to be affected on second exam so have started oral liq pred and will see how they get on. Just not the usual signs no skin lesions yet but facial swelling likely due to the lymphadenopathy. Just couldn't think of another cause other than strangles but no eyelid swelling or crusting as yet. I have already covered with antibiotics anyway but now started 1mg/kg pred.

Is the puss sterile? If not then antibiotics for 7 days. Some can develop severe pain around ears, mandible, we give them buprenorphine BID.
