Hi Lucy. We can rule that out too. No dog or cat fleas in the Falkland Islands - so no routine flea treatment required. We do see the occasional penguin flea on a dog but they don't hang around for very long - mind you they certainly can give a bite as I've experienced for myself - not a good idea to linger too long in a magellanic penguin colony.

I imagine you checked this, but any association with applying a spot-on flea treatment? It's more of a cat thing to lick it off and salivate, but the "every month or two" made me wonder.

Frogs and toads not possible - as no amphibians here in the Falkland islands but that doesn't preclude another animal or plant irritant of some sort - just not sure what it might be. Dog has free access to miles of coastline and i'm sure he investigates everything he comes across to see if it is edible.

Yes I’d be thinking toads as well. We have also had a few, mainly in labradors, greedy dogs that they are.
