This might be a bit premature but I I am asking for non-lethal options for a competition horse that somehow suffered a dislocated hip overnight. One significant aspect for me is that he is my wife's horse that she bred and holds a special

RE: Equine hip injury?

These are the radiographs:

Thank you Lucy, yes it has been difficult. Annika is holding out well but as the first horse she bred and having been trained up to three-day-eventing it is very sad and a big disappointment of course. For me, I feel sorry for Annika and sad to see him badly injured but emotionally I had not bonded with Flash as much as with other horses she owned simply because he was stabled away for his training so did not deal with him on a daily basis. Annika/we also have a Welsh pony Saga, now aged 28 who is so extremely docile that she is ideal for use by Riding For the Disabled children. She is also away but neighs to us when we arrive at her field at the stable. She is the only horse in my life that I have been able to walk up to in a field and inject her without needing anyone to hold her at all. I would and have trusted her with my life in effect! She was born in the paddock next to the house and Annika rang me at work to say that her dam was foaling right now if I wanted to see it! I got there in double-quick time saw her born and carried her inside when she was say 10-20 minutes old Since that day I handled her, checked her mouth her feet and it worked she never resists examinations. I am not sure that I could carry her into a stable nowadays though! Let me be completely frank. I am ot really a horsey-person as such but I do love Saga and trust her absolutely. It will be a sad day when she goes I do know that!

Thanks for your all of your comments.

RE: Equine hip injury?

Sorry to hear this Julian. We've reached the conclusion and sadly my wife's horse has been euthanased. After discussion with a well-known referral centre in the south-east, transport was deemed impractical and probably downright cruel from Lincolnshire. Onging 10/10 lameness was unacceptable as we all know; The treatment options were not good and so Somulose did a nice peaceful job for poor old Flash! We all accepted that Flash was not a paddock-pony type animal and his eventing would not have been likely in the future so Somulose it was. My wife is upset but made of strong stuff so bearing up well under the circumstances. She still has Flash's brother to ride herself and can dote on him now! We are hoping to receive copies of the digital x rays and if so could post them up eventually.

I hope everyone is well.

RE: Equine hip injury?

Thank you very much for your helpful comments. Okay, we've had the visit and x-ray. The hip is okay except for distinct swelling probably caused by a fall . We've had an x-ray that shows a sub-luxated P1/P2, and two small cracks in P2 for good measure! We are awaiting referral details for further action but for now Flash has a hefty gutter-splint. and analgesia. It is a case now of preparing for he worst and hoping for the best.

Thank you all, once again.

RE: Equine hip injury?

No idea - never seen a dislocated hip in a horse -but on the basis that 'common things are common I'd be looking elsewhere first - as suggested by others. I've seen plenty of 'ruptured tendons' that turned out to be pus in the foot!).

RE: Equine hip injury?

Julian,

This is a rare diagnosis in a large horse so hopefully it is something else (pus in the foot remains the most likely diagnosis until examined by a veterinary surgeon).

Closed reductions generally fail, surgery is possible but is not to be undertaken lightly.

RE: Equine hip injury?

Probably no option to replace if it is dislocated. My first checks would be (other than obvious fracture) upward fixation of patella and a monster pus int' foot. I've been to "broken leg hanging off" for both of these. Good luck
