I second the practical tooth extraction course. I used to hate dentals, now I’m one of the strongest advocates out there. They’re challenging and each is unique, and very satisfying! I was booked to go to Accesia next month, but that’s now cancelled which I’m gutted about!

I've enjoyed courses the most too. I did small animal medicine and then a surgery one ages ago, and then an equine behaviour certificate after that. They were far more fun and productive as they were structured and definitely reminiscent of freer times back at college. I've done plenty of box ticking free CPD and webinars which weren't nearly as useful and often very soporific.

bovine reproduction via Liverpool university I also attended a bovine reproduction course at Liverpool, in 1994 I think. I prided myself on being very accurate with manual fertility examinations but there I learnt to use an ultrasound and I never looked back after that. The practice bought a scanner and it all worked out well. My course was only one week staying at Leahurst so we all took it seriously and not as an opportunity to have a week-long party!

You do know I'm trying to joke don't you Michael? No offence meant!!

Also a bit niche - my diploma in bovine reproduction via Liverpool university. It's basically a 2 year part time masters degree aimed at the RCVS diploma level (hence the name). 8 residential weeks, with own research and dissertation. Various assignments and homework throughout the course. Felt like you were learning things within a defined structure. Made some friends for life as you are going through the same thing as a small group. Learnt so much, wouldn't like to think how much beer and whisky was drank as we stayed in a pub for the residential weeks!

Whilst the cost looks expensive as a lump sum of money, the cost per hour of quality interaction makes it very cheap CPD. Even allowing for 8 weeks out of practice and not earning money.

Some of the most 'expensive' CPD hasn't cost me money but was free, I learnt nothing and wasted my free time.

A bit niche, but three weeks at Accesia in Sweden spread over three years completely transformed my approach to dentistry and oral surgery. It was far and away the most useful CPD I have ever done and I would highly recommend the courses there for anyone interested in teeth
