Appetite fine, activity levels normal. Defecating normally (produced pellets during the consultation).

Not much at a guess!1- 2 ml per day? No idea without looking it up somewhere. Good luck with that.

RE: Hamster with swollen abdomen

[quote userid="6437" url="~/001/veterinary-clinical/small-animal/f/misc-case-discussions/29013/hamster-with-swollen-abdomen/221368"]
Get some scans and post them

Not PU/PD as far as the owner was aware. I'll ask her to measure the intake

RE: Hamster with swollen abdomen

Get some scans and post them

Indeed...,

But don't be deceived by the normal creamy vaginal discharge of a hamster in season of course.

RE: Hamster with swollen abdomen

Pyometra perhaps?

RE: Hamster with swollen abdomen

Sorry, forgot to mention the obvious. Female, only hamster in the house, owner has had for over a year. Appeared suddenly rather than gradually. Owner palpated the abdomen during the consult ans it was soft, no masses felt. I was considering possibly ovarian cysts? But they wouldn't appear so suddenly

RE: Hamster with swollen abdomen

Hello |Anthony.

Is the distension tense or soft? If firm it sounds like fluid. f soft. what can you palpate. It sounds like ultrasound would be the best investigative procedure: non-invasive, no GA compared to an X-ray so good luck with this. If fluid, paracentesis perhaps would be revealing.

OTOH! How do you fancy a hamster laparotomy? As a last resort, literally last in fact? I'd be interested to now the outcome here...

TIA.
