Am using prozinc in a cat that metabolises Caninsulin too fast. Prozinc is unavailable - anyone give advice on alternative sources or lentus ( glargine) insulin and how you transition from one to the other

RE: Prozinc unavailable

I agree with the above, give Boehringer a call. They are advising transitioning onto different insulins so I guess they are expecting this to be a long lasting issue. I spoke to them yesterday about all of our cases and they asked if any had been on a different insulin previously. All ours had been on ProZinc since diagnosis so their advice for yours might well be different! They have provided an information sheet about transitioning.

Glargine/ Lantus should be fine for your patient. I've only managed one cat on this previously but it did well, no major pit falls! Some useful info here:

https://www.aaha.org/globalassets/02-guidelines/diabetes/diabetes-guidelines_final.pdf

(The latter is owner-focused but I found useful!)

RE: Prozinc unavailable

Ring boehringer, they may have still some stock they are holding for such cases, if not Lantus.
Boehringer can give you information on transitioning insulins.

RE: Prozinc unavailable

Boehringer have extended the "if broached use within" date to 3-6 months (as long as it has been stored correctly and there is no discolouring to liquid).

If you can get hold of Glargine (Lantus) that would your best option otherwise so I would see if you can source that first.

If the client runs out of ProZinc completely, call Boehringer on 01344746957 and talk to one of the technical vets who will advise what to do on a case by case basis.
