As far as I am aware there are drugs like aglepristone that are licensed for

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol

Thank you all, my doubt was mainly about the use of Alizin if the bitch is not pregnant, thus the dog would receive a drug without needing it. But I see that giving it is common practice.

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol

Enquirers usually b****r off when I tell them a) they have to wait before "the injection"; and b) what it will cost.

Not surprising really.

Cynical old me.

But not finding sperm would not rule out a mating. I am not sure how accurate this would be so what use would it be. One situation where I am sure the owners would want the vet to be as certain as they could be!

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol
We tend to advise waiting till the end of the season to give an injection, as then a second accidental mating doesn’t cause an issue. Although I will always have the discussion with the owner about the alternative of spaying in around 3 weeks as I’m happier doing that if the bitch is not intended for breeding. Alizin is not cheap!
I would tend to do the same, wait until the end of the season and give the Alizin, as far as I am aware it is safe to give if they haven't been mated, more effective if given sooner, and there isn't the concern of the bitch having to give birth to the foetuses as there can be if it is done later. And don't forget the next season may happen earlier than expected!

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol

Other options would be vaginal cytology see where in oestrus bitch is and if the possible mating was recent is there sperm present. (Haven't actually done this have alizined or speyed but was reccomended by Gary England and sounded sensible alternate option)

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol

I use Alizin (although haven't in quite a while, saw loads more accidental matings in the rural practice I worked in before. Wouldn't wait til 4 weeks/scan though, the earlier the more reliable and easier on the bitch. It is expensive, especially in a larger bitch. Like Joyce I would advise to wait until the end of the season though to prevent a second mating happening as would need to repeat the treatment. I am not aware of any other licensed "morning after" options.

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol

We do basically the same as Joyce Whitehead. Only ever had one lot of puppies born. Very effective just expensive. I'd rather not wait until 28 days, scan, then abort unless there is great doubt over the mating actually having happened. Happy spaying.

When I qualified we had Mesalin (estradiol), given 3&5 days after accidental mating. Pain in the arse as it always fell on a weekend. Lots of bitches went on and still had puppies, sometimes just small litters. Many got re-mated and re-treated. Glad it went. Was cheaper.

RE: Preventive pregnancy termination protocol

We tend to advise waiting till the end of the season to give an injection, as then a second accidental mating doesn’t cause an issue.
