Came on just one day after had been running in park, in and out of water and undergrowth and owner

RE: Tail case for recent grads <3 years only!
As far as uni in QLD is concerned we were taught that digoxin has a "heart-sparing action" which gives you an idea of SA medicine in QLD 1962.

I used to empty anal glands and put the dogs on pain relief. They got better within a few days. I suspect now that the emptying of anal 'glands' was a bit of a red herring!

Acute myositis triggered probably by swimming in cold water (called cold tail around here).

It can be very painful so just watch the front end when examining patient!

All seem to recover and not seen a case where the muscles atrophy.

No need to investigate usually. The tail is not broken!!

RE: Tail case for recent grads <3 years only! So I think this is most commonly called "limber tail" in UK, but there are a lot of other names for it such as:

swimmer's tail

coccygeal myopathy

limp tail

(others at: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/acute-caudal-myopathy-limber-tail )

I would give 5 days NSAIDs (e.g. carprofen) - can be quite sore.

If you haven't seen a case before, then you have now - that picture is classic! I would say personally see one in the clinic about every 3 years only, but probably depends a lot on demographics of dogs you treat.

Can be diagnosed by typing "dog sore tail" into Google and lots of hits on first page.

RE: Tail case for recent grads <3 years only!
