Not pleasant at all. One was a rescue' group who knew who the new owner was but felt that something hadn't been done to their liking (think they hadn't spayed it) and basically tried to dognap it back! Police, everyone involved but the new owners could prove it lived at their house, was their pet and the id chip registration was completely ignored by the police

RE: Microchipping from the other side of the fence

I don't want to be part of microchip police. If an official power want us to do this (check microchips against owner details in databases on a regular basis) then I want training in the legal aspects of pet ownership!

RE: Microchipping from the other side of the fence
checks should be in place but it's going to be time consuming and how do we sort that out?
Doing the lookups could be easy - most PMS's communicate with microchip databases for the purposes of registration, so doing the lookup could be done that way; or a central lookup system that communicates with all the registered databases.

However it's still what you do with the result; we are in the middle of one ownership dispute that is going to court, and I really don't think we want to get in the middle of all the other ones that will arise. Not to mention data protection that limits what information we can release regarding microchip details to various parties.

RE: Microchipping from the other side of the fence

Late last year our cat went missing. Dora used to appear maybe 3 times a week, eat the other cats food, hiss at me and then return to her territory, aided by an old lady who 8 years ago had decided that Dora was in fact her cat (though she knew we vaccinated and looked after her medically)

It turned out that Dora had had an RTA and had been taken to the local vets who had scanned her, but understandably not checked who owned her. Result Dora died at the surgery and we were never told. It was only after we made enquiries that we found the truth as conveniently the old lady had moved north (we initially thought Dora had gone that way)

So in a way I agree, checks should be in place but it's going to be time consuming and how do we sort that out?

There are several databases that we don't have access to and we don't have time to contact them all. This means it is not practicable to do the checking ourselves. One or a maximum of two databases make sense (only to allow competition!).
