I've just skimmed through the datasheets for the five main cat vaccine brands marketed in the UK. They vary greatly in the antigen types for their

RE: Booster vaccs for cats

Half the practices I've locumed regular hours for the last couple of years do FeLV every 3 bit RCP every year, the other half does only RC every year. About 3 years ago I was even working for a practice that was vaccinating everything every year (both cats and dogs). Did put me a bit in an akward spot with clients coming over from a different vet.

RE: Booster vaccs for cats

We use ducat annually for 2 years and nobivac trio and FeLv on the third year

RE: Booster vaccs for cats

We currently use Feligen/Leukofeligen and will do annual flu/ent with leukaemia every 3 years.

RE: Booster vaccs for cats

we just don't see vaccine breakdowns in cats. Yes we have chronic snufflers, carrier herpes breakdown in stress times but these are in cats getting annual herpes anyway so cannot blame the client/ patient.

In UK with the care of owned cats, the low level of feral cats and having now read up on what the component of our vaccines are (we use the Virbac/MSD range (same product)) and seeing all components modified live in the flu/ ent part and with FeLV almost non-existent and valid for 3 year intervals already makes me think we could go to 3 year intervals perfectly safely after the first year booster.

Humans vaccines as children against the big viral killers are not boosted because the medics expect the child to then come into contact with field infection at regular intervals to keep the immunity active which would be similar for the flu viruses in our patients.

The vaccines that need repeating as mentioned by Bob are against toxoids (no replication) and of course influenza virus with its infinite number of mutations and serotypes and being highly contagious but even then it does look sometimes like a case of NHS being seen to do something. How many times have we been told the strain was the 'wrong' one?

RE: Booster vaccs for cats

My favourite circular argument in favour of vaccinating cats annually goes like this:

Premises:

1) cats need annual vaccinations if going to be in area of high disease risk.

2) for cats not in need of an annual vaccination it is still vital to get them into the vets for an "annual health check" the benefits of which are so obvious that they don't need to be quantified by any formal means.

3) a veterinary clinic is an area of high disease risk.

Conclusion: thus all cats need an annual vaccination.

So those, like myself, who don't vaccinate all cats annually must consider one of those premises to be false (or do a lot of house-visits).

RE: Booster vaccs for cats

Flu/ent/leuk every three years with Flu/leuk between up to the age of 10-12yrs (depending on lifestyle) then stop the leuk fraction.

We will consider changing leukaemia intervals when a few more vaccine brands change their data sheets to three years. My understanding is that the three year interval license change was based on quite a small study.

Perfectly willing to adjust our protocols downwards if appropriate!
