I'm no expert on the condition. I didn't personally see the dog in the video again and have no personal experience in treatment options.

Here is some further information if interested

The classic (though dated) 2003 JVIM article (free-access: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/j.1939-1676.2003.tb02477.x )

The most up-to-date peer reviewed material was in the Vet Record:

https://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/content/179/21/543 [helpful editorial entitled "Why is L-2 hydroxyglutaric aciduria relevant for a general practitioner?" and giving one page overview of condition] "A variety of treatments have been administered but no uniformly effective one has been discovered."

Signs can be variable, so someone reading this thread and unfamiliar with the disease may have seen a case and not known it, for instance:

"Many of the affected dogs have difficulty learning and some develop signs of dementia. At times, these signs are subtle, like staring into space. Often a hyperexcitable attention-seeking SBT is accepted as normal. When dementia progresses to disorientation, head pressing, aimless wandering or inappropriate aggression, veterinary attention will probably be sought. "

and https://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/content/179/21/545 [survey results on 27 dogs].

For most-up-to-date info, probably best to refer to social media:

https://twitter.com/L2HGA

https://www.facebook.com/L2HGACanine?fref=ts

http://www.l2hga.com/

But nothing new since the veterinary record articles that I can see.
Would a general anaesthetic for neutering be different or more complicated?
Great question! I don't know the answer though. I'll guess not affecting anesthetic particularly unless anyone corrects me on that. I don't think neutering would be more complicated, but I would personally only see downsides to neutering the dog in the video (such as potential for weight gain).

I'll blame it on the poor quality video [it skipping on my computer anyway] but suspect just not a good choice of case for discussion. Still, for those remaining curious:

Can be diagnosed by typing "staffy walking funny" into google and then going to the second link, then DNA check for L2-HGA at laboklin was positive for 2 copies of mutant gene [other diagnostic approaches are available and valid]

Diagnosis: L2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria.

Plan: gave vaccine and link for doing DNA testing.

http://www.laboklin.co.uk/laboklin/showGeneticTest.jsp?testID=8100DGD

Follow-up after results: none

RE: Gait of the week (case discussion with answer)

Beats - it seemed you tried to upload a movie file with a .asf extension.

First thing to say is that I always recommend that video files are uploaded to youtube, 'unlisted' if you don't want others seeing it, and then shared in this forum. It's just a better, more reliable way of doing things.

That said, this platform is supposed to support the uploading of .asf files, and I am not sure why it didn't work. I have asked the software providers. Meantime, the quick workaround for posting a video which proves to be unsupported for any reason, is to convert it to MP4 using something like this: https://www.freefileconvert.com/ (thats what I did in this case).

Will advise what software people say, meantime, bumping this back up so you can all now discuss Beats' case of the week.

On that score, well above my pay grade, I know, but I look at that video and think 'neurology', not 'orthopaedics'. Is it in the right forum?!

RE: Gait of the week (case discussion with answer)

Arlo Guthrie

I tried a video file to see if that helped you with picture / image posting - 2.24MB and let me post it fine (but I think the file type I used perhaps not supported - worked on my VLC player prior to posting).
