Or is biopsy the only way ?

There are clues, of course – for instance, if there is a lesion that is purely expansile, it's far more probably neoplastic or a cyst than infection.

However, when you come back to the real world and put together all the history, gross appearance, symptoms and clinical signs, you can usually get near enough to certainty to determine what to do next.

RE: Dental X-rays, infection or neoplasia

Trying to load xrays , thought I had

RE: Dental X-rays, infection or neoplasia

Hi Bob. Do you have any radiographs-these can help guide your biopsy and diagnosis? We commonly get asked whether changes seen in cats in the mandibular bone around their canine teeth afftected by TR is infection/inflammation/neoplasia. Unfortunately biopsies are the only way of knowing this. Where you have widespread tooth resorption in cats, particularly replacement resorption (type II), you can get a lot of reactive change of the surrounding mandible or maxilla. There are very few indications for antibiotics in dentistry. If you have a patient with osteomyelitis then they are likely to require at least 4-8 weeks treatment with antibiotics based on c+s. If you can post some photos +/- radiographs we can probably help a bit more?

RE: Dental X-rays, infection or neoplasia

Guess it's not impossible, but no something I've ever heard discussed with respect to dental xray changes

RE: Dental X-rays, infection or neoplasia

Unless concerned about TB?

RE: Dental X-rays, infection or neoplasia

Or response to antibiotics
