I have an epileptic dog which I have recently started on KBr in addition to his pb. His fits are stable but he was having regular episodes of head tremours and vacancey which I felt were probably focal episodes. His pb levels are perfect (bang

Re: Sodium Bromide in Epileptic Dogs?

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for your comments, very helpful! Turns out the dog had settled on the KBr anyway by the time I got back to the owner!

Not one dog has vomited on this formulation, and the owners are more than happy with the fact that it is considerably cheaper! Use the same dose, and have no issues with fit control changing.

Re: Sodium Bromide in Epileptic Dogs?
His pb levels are perfect (bang in the middle of the range)
Bear in mind that 'bang in the middle' means you've got room to play with regarding the dose rate, some dogs require higher serum levels than others, why not try increasing the phenobarb dose.

What form of KBr are you giving?

Cheers,

I have never used NaBr myself but I have heard of its use when KBr seems to cause gastric irritation. I understand the dose of NaBr is 15% lower than KBr dose, but it is difficult to monitor whether you are in therapeutic levels as I am not aware of anybody that can accurately measure this.

The other drug I would consider if this is not an option is Levetiracetam (Keppra) which I have seem some good results with.
