Our wholesaler (NVS) have said they have no alternative to offer us at the moment. We asked if they had injectable cimetidine, but they don't., only the oral

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

thanks will look in to the injectable omeprazole option.

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

Not sure how this reply wil slot in with the new system.

You could use metoclopramide for anti nausea and prokinetic effect. Antinausea action better in dogs than cats due to its mode of action. I can't remember if there's been supply problems recently.

I would also use omeprazole bid in place of ranitidine in most cases. Anecdotally I noticed when we started using iv omeprazole in our inpatients we were using far less metaclopramide CRIs as additional treatment.

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

Current evidence seems to suggest Ranitidine is fairly ineffective in dogs anyway. ?Esopempazole injection.

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

That's ok, new reply system is a bit different!

I must admit I'm more often using it for a pro-kinetic effect in those nauseous dogs (and cats sometimes) rather than for its antacid effect (haven't read the whole consensus statement yet though I must admit, only skimmed it)

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

Sorry Lucy meant to be a general reply not to you!

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

Have a look at the Recent ACVIM consensus on use of antacids in small animals - I will reach for omeprazole BID (will only use ranitidine for pro-kinetic use in rabbits).

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

Ironically we can't get the syrup from anywhere but currently seem to be ok for the injectable (via Covetrus) - though I'm not sure when we last tried to order any so that info may not be up to date!

RE: Alternatives to injectable ranitidine?

Have you got injectable omeprazole?
