If the context suggests fear aggression, then SSRIs can be helpful, though the dog will never become a cuddly friend to strangers. But if the problem is dominance, territorial, food-related, or interdog aggression, for example, the medications can disinhibit the aggressive behavior by reducing any anxiety that is limiting the extent of aggressive behavior. And none of the meds will dramatically change the situation without a concomitant degeree of behavioral modification therapy that is really hard for most owners to accomplish. No treatment can guarantee the safety of the people interacting with the dog, so that has to be clear to everyone involved as well.

Re: Fluoxetine in Dogs

My dog was on this, after behavioural referral. One of the side effects is disinhinbition, in my dogs case barking and snarling at other dogs from much greater distances. Hence I would not advise this at all, the dog may have some inhibition in some circumstances and this could remove it.

You have given your professional advice, stick to it. If they choose to ignore it or go down different routes that’s fine but don't be responsible for it. Be very cautious about advising alternatives especially if you are not sure about them yourself. At the end of the day human safety is by far the most important issue here.
