I'm due to see a cat with Calici tonight following a swab and tooth extractions which I saw last week
Treatment options?
I do have www.catvirus.com/stomatitis.html but yet to read it as just found it.

I have a broken [snapped] root after a molar extraction which is asymptomatic and recognised by the dentist, who said it is not a worry, mind you, it's very subcut.

RE: Calici Virus in cats - treatment options

[quote user="Julian Earl"]never found total extraction to be very effective.
If you're not xraying to confirm no root left, you may have a possible answer to the first part of your statement. There are some interesting papers looking at doing xrays post extractions where the vet felt everything was out e.g. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24446405 and the numbers are high

RE: Calici Virus in cats - treatment options

[quote user="Julian Earl"], but never found total extraction to be very effective.
It's strange what different people find. I have found total extraction, or total cheek tooth extraction, to be very effective, though not always 100%.

Some people claim good results with interferon. So i guess it's worth a try if other measures have failed. Personally i donm't see the point of trying to "treat" the presence of calicivirus.

RE: Calici Virus in cats - treatment options

I have a agreed with Kate about calicivirus specifically , but never found total extraction to be very effective. Okay, as far as I can tell no roots were left and I usually resorted to long-term non-steroidals, particularly meloxicam as being a liquid it is easiest for the owners. I rarely tried Interferon so have no useful comment to add about that really. Except to ask, is it worth the cost? I think thorough dental hygiene is helpful as well of course. De-scaling primarily.

RE: Calici Virus in cats - treatment options

Neil Wheadon there is no cure or specific treatment options for the calicivirus per se. If the cat has chronic gingivostomatitis and oral hygiene ie daily tooth cleaning and sub gingival cleaning regularly isn't helping, then caudal extractions are likely needed if the cat actually has CGS. Interferon treatment is advised by some, details are on the links posted, but generally only if caudal extractions haven't worked well enough in resolving the inflammation. Important to remember that calicivirus is involved but not the sole cause.

RE: Calici Virus in cats - treatment options

https://www.dentalvets.co.uk/common-cases/feline-oral-cavity-conditions
