We also used Peter Cockett for many years ... always gave very sensible advice. Would happily recommend him.

Most of the larger NHS hospitals have medical physics departments which physicists that are qualified RPAs. You will also need to appoint an RPS within the practice To be in change of day to day radiation protection. Who needs to undertake training. There are a number of courses both human and veterinary specific ones. This can be either an RVN or MRCVS

The list of RPA certificate holders is on http://www.rpa2000.org.uk/list-of-certificate-holders/ . Not all these people will have suitable veterinary experience - so you would need to make due enquiries - but some do quite a number of veterinary practices. I believe there is only one RPA who is veterinary qualified - Peter Cockett (as above). He covers most of the UK as far as I know and advises PSS on radiation safety etc. Speaking personally I would definitely recommend him (and I'm not on any commission!).

When I set ours up, the main options were high density block, brick, Barium plaster or lead. You'll need to double check the specification, thicknesses, costs and pros and cons of each.

Top tip: supervise all of the building work. Your average builder doesn't know about radiation safety and might do something seemingly innoccuous. (Mine decided to move the door, which had been carefully aligned, but luckily I realised quickly what he had done.

Yes - you must legally have an RPA and he/she is the person to advise you on all aspects of radiation safety etc.

And the BVA 'Guidance Notes on the safe use of ionising radiation' is a useful source of information - available from BVA.

No doubt many will be along with more useful advice, but my two-pennorth is that so much depends on what the room is like that you propose to use, and what sorts of exposure you are going to make (for instance, I'm guessing that in the zoo you will be doing quite a lot with the beam not vertical).

You have to pay to have a Radiation Protection Adviser, so you might as well get value from his fee and get him to come and look and give detailed and specific advice.
