In that order. Medotomidine imo makes them noise sensitive even when heavily sedated. I sometimes wonder how many have distorted hearing. Some dogs just nervous about everything.
Exactly, all our dogs have been fine with it. Took them clay pigeon shooting when young. The cocker looks for the falling birds (although is used to a lot of bangs with little action.....)

I know it's a bit out of fashion but I still like ACP - mild sedative an anxiolytic. Don't believe some of the daft rumours you hear.

RE: What are people using as sedatives for Bonfire night?
If it's the former, maybe exposing to fireworks (or a simulation) during the first 3-4 months of life should be advised in all dogs?
It already is ...the dogs trust link above contains links to various 'sounds' CDs, including fireworks, that they recommend are played to all puppies.

When I get puppies in at this time of the year I encourage the owners to see it as perfect timing for habituation and training, rather than something to fear.

RE: What are people using as sedatives for Bonfire night?

Derek Lyon

Have you got a smart speaker? If so, ask Alexa to play 'fireworks display' periodically so the dogs get desensitised ....do nice things with them at the same time or while being fed etc ... gradually increase the volume over the next few weeks and you'll have a stess-free new year!

If you dont have a smart speaker, you can buy CDs online ... 'sounds scary' has them on it.

You can download it for free here:

My own dog isn't phased in the slightest, I wonder if its due partly to the fact we got her at the beginning of October 3 years ago, so she heard them as a puppy and in part due to the fact we just ignore any anxious behaviour and don't thus confirm that anxiety is ok. (She's a pain in the butt for many other things however )

One was a really aggressive little frenchie who was lunging at us, and we couldn’t even get an Elizabethan collar on to stop biting. With the trazodone/gaba combo we managed to get an injection into him safely. I’ve also used it on a very panicky westie to get blood samples.

I used trazodone at 10mg/kg rounded down and gaba at 20mg/kg rounded up. Dose given the night before then again 90-120 minutes before seeing. I believe others have used acp on top as injectable but I haven’t tried this.

RE: What are people using as sedatives for Bonfire night?

I am also using trazadone for the first time as recommended to me by someone from another practice who uses it with great effect - I have had some good effects so far, any feedback on this would be good. Also it is supposed to be great used as a drug to adminster 2-3hr before consult for those dogs that get very stressed/ anxious and aren't able to be handled well.
