What do people think about drug withdrawals prior to ASIS testing. There was an article in VetTimes recently by head of dermatology at AHT. She said that it is not necessary to stop short acting steroids at anti-inflammatory doses prior to

RE: drug withdrawal prior to ASIS test

[quote user="Seamus McManus"]

Thanks for the reply

withdrawals for intradermal skin testing are still recommended. Since posting I have continued to research this and it seems to be the consensus that it is not necessary for serological testing, at least in a lot of cases (fairly short courses of anti-inflammatory dose preds, cytopoint, apoquel et).

That's helpful thank you, I have been advised by dermatologists in the past that it's okay to do serological testing while on anti-inflammatory doses of prednisolone, and I have done and got results that fit the clinical picture, but have wondered what to do with dogs on Apoquel.

RE: drug withdrawal prior to ASIS test

Thanks for the reply

I'm not going to disagree with the Head of Dermatology at AHT!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I very rarely do allergy testing of any kind (a discussion for a different thread perhaps?) for suspected atopic (or atopic-like dermatitis or food-induced atopic dermatitis) cases. I do however find it a fascinating subject.

Were the cases with no positives young patients maybe less than a year old [known to be less likely to give "positives"]? Which lab do you use if you're happy to say(they don't all do the same thing)?

On the rare occasions that I do allergy testing, I usually do prior to giving any steroids, but I realise as I type this that will not always be reasonable approach, so if not necessary to avoid their use then all the better.

You may find this an interesting read also: https://bmcvetres.biomedcentral.com/track/pdf/10.1186/s12917-016-0917-z

Final thought would be that for years dermatologists thought that being on steroids required some level of withdrawl prior to allergy-testing, so what has changed this dermatologist's opinion?

I wasn't sure either!
