My colleague has asked if I can see if there are any neurologists (or neurology enthusiasts) out there (or anyone knows of any) who work somewhere that will do direct insurance claims. The dog is a 2Y10m female neutered pug who had a 40 min episode

RE: Pug with tremours - help with referral
Also try Rowe referrals, Bristol- Ian Jennings- not a specialist but I believe keen interest in neurology and AP in diagnostic imaging esp MRI
Maybe not an RCVS specialist, but pretty good lettering after his name though!

Very useful to know about Willows for future. Worth keeping Rowe referrals and Ian Jennings on the radar too.

Blood work was going to be one of our first steps but some of the referral centres we use prefer blood results from their own lab so we were holding off until we knew where the client was likely to be going.

RE: Pug with tremours - help with referral

Hi Hannah,

We (Willows) will do direct insurance claims - ideally they need to be set up in advance of the appointment but it is relatively easy to do so.

From a medical point of view I would suggest that some investigation would be sensible prior to referral to make sure the dog is referred to the right people. Comprehensive blood work plus a bile acid stimulation test would be sensible in this breed to make sure there is nothing to suggest a metabolic cause (ie a portosystemic shunt) and if thats normal then neurology would certainly be your best bet.

Would also get the owner to video any episodes to show the the neurologist at the time as otherwise these cases can be frustratingly normal.

Yes we have. They wouldn't do a direct payment without a pre-authorisation form and the clients insurance company (can't remember which one) said they don't do pre-authorisations.

In case it's of any use to anyone else, we have since found that Cave Veterinary Specialists will do direct claims. They phone the insurance company at the time of booking the appointment to ask questions to check that they are happy the client has enough cover.

RE: Pug with tremours - help with referral

Have you tried Lumbry Park?
