Like Lucy said , I read a link with GI disease (think it was on here actually!)

Some have been treated at the Vet School with gaba
It was mentioned at a CPD even run by Oakwood a few months ago. I've had 2 vizlas (weirdly seen in one week) - one who had been on pexion for 2 years with a head tremor that would stop when offered food, and one who had tremors at presentation and was found to have pancreatitis.

I put both on omeprazole and there was an improvement

RE: Fly Catching in Spaniels
If really is fly-snapping then fluoxetine may be more effective https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1525505015005739
Thanks Sarah, I found that really interesting! I have a fly-snapper at the moment, with whom diet trials seem to really be helping, but nice to have some alternatives in mind in case!

RE: Fly Catching in Spaniels
You misunderstand. Grass eating, obsessively, is a sign of SM

RE: Fly Catching in Spaniels

If really is fly-snapping then fluoxetine may be more effective https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1525505015005739

RE: Fly Catching in Spaniels
Does it eat grass?
Probably mild SM. trial ranitidine or omeprazole.

RE: Fly Catching in Spaniels
What the current thoughts on cause/therapy for this ?
I feel like I heard something recently about a link between this and GI disease, but I'm afraid I can't recall exactly what, when, from whom, or in fact whether I may have completely imagined it...

A quick google seems to turn up a paper on 7 dogs from the Canadian Vet journal in 2012, so hardly conclusive evidence, but perhaps I didn't make it up!

RE: Fly Catching in Spaniels

My (non-expert) thoughts:

ideally I'd like a video

then I'd probably take a wait and see approach for few weeks if problem is pretty intermittent and mild.

assuming no other symptoms and problem either frequent and severe, or persists at a severe enough level to warrant intervention, then I'd do drug trials.

Probably:

1) Clomipramine

followed by

2) Phenobarbitone

presume either phenobarb=responsive (ie seizure-like activity) or compulsive behaviour.

If the problem is frequent and severe enough to need medicating, then the response to medication should be pretty obvious (certainly in the case of phenobarb I would reckon)

Fair chance will have CM/SM (like many CKCS), [+/- PSOM, like many CKCS, and will develop mitral valve endocardiosis, like many CKCS etc etc] - the problem with CKCS is that pretty much any clinical sign can get blamed on these conditions when they may simply be co-morbidities, but if has neck pain or convincing CM/SM signs then can always treat that anyway as unlikely to do harm, even if may have nothing to do with iatropic problem.
