&lt;p&gt;As Ben Goldacre said: we don&amp;#39;t need another pain killer thats better than placebo. We need one, that&amp;#39;s better than the existing. (or similar&amp;nbsp;&lt;img src="/emoticons/v2/Winking_smiley.gif" alt="Wink" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Unfortunately, standard for licensing both himan and veterinary drugs is exactly that.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The first warning flag comes up reading the authors list, though: the lead author works for Boehringer Ingelheim...&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The next warning flag is the question how much the approach used tells us about real patients: they gave the meds before the onset of pain. I&amp;#39;m not seeing a lot of dogs where I start treating arthritis before they are showing signs of pain, and they were only treating them once following up for 24 hours and the study was only assessor-blinded.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So, while interesting, it&amp;#39;s not actually robust evidence and I would take it with a very big grain of salt...&lt;/p&gt;
