My 9 year old Fn whippet has suffered with chronic plasmacytic-lymphocytic rhinitis since she was 3 years old. In the past doxycycline has helped to control it, however it is getting worse and less responsive. Nasal flushing, saline nasal drops

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

I think that in the Lobetti et Al. Paper that Ben gave a link to earlier (hi Ben!)...the best response was to immunotherapy. Response to steroids was surprisingly inconsistent.

Sadly they don't specify how they chose the allergens or what tx protocol they chose although you could probably just email the authors (in which case I'd really like to know what they say!!). If no info forthcoming, personally I would probably just do an in vitro panel of allergens and then use sublingually immunotherapy.

Best wishes

N=2, but we have tried maropitant 1:9 in Hartmanns and tried it on cats. Both have cleared up wonderfully with one drop once daily into each nostril. Worth a try in desperation?

N=1, I tried it in the case I mentioned in this thread - did make a little difference for a while but then I think the disease got so severe it didn't work as well. Though it may have been a compliance issue as well.

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

N=2, but we have tried maropitant 1:9 in Hartmanns and tried it on cats. Both have cleared up wonderfully with one drop once daily into each nostril. Worth a try in desperation?

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

Top of my DDs would be a foreign body: straw, grass seeds, visualised with an auroscope and removed with alligator forceps quite easily. The Labrador that had a 15cm length of straw removed looked decidedly happy afterwards! Clearly no medication would have helped that dog! I wouldnot go for rhinotomy without very good reason to believe there is something to remove: FB or tumour or whatever. I saw one performed when a student and it seemed very traumatic procedure! I swore that #iwould never inflict that on a dog if #i could help it!I

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog
Would be worth considering a fungal element, given the need for chronic antibiotics in such cases, it might allow for an opportunistic fungus, poss aspergillosis but consider other fungi?
I had a rhinitis case where it was worked up, had a CT and rhinoscopy, no fungal plaques seen, no fungal growth on swab. Improved initially then got worse again - positive serology for Aspergillus and then when referred there were large fungal plaques visible, and trephination was performed.

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

This is not intended as a serious suggestion for your dog, however I've oft wondered if a tracheostomy in a sufficiently severe case could be a magic remedy?

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

Would be worth considering a fungal element, given the need for chronic antibiotics in such cases, it might allow for an opportunistic fungus, poss aspergillosis but consider other fungi?

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

Hi Katie,

Sorry to hear about your dog, I think chronic LP rhinitis cases can be some of the most frustrating that we manage. It sounds like you've done all the sensible things. I'm aware of some of the work being done with maropitant but don't have any first hand experience to add I'm afraid

Good quality data seems to be lacking, this case series saw the best results with desensitisation and a combination of cyclosporine and corticosteroids. I've had two dogs refractory to anti-inflammatory treatment (both NSAIDs and steroids) respond encouragingly to the addition of cyclosporine this year. Regular nebulising with saline seems to help some.

We have tried all the things you have tried.

Pulse co-amoxyclav gives him relief, though it is now looking like a few day after the anti-biotics stop: he's puffing his cheeks and the snotty strings are back.

I watched a webinar and the speaker pointed out: imagine having a cold and someone tried your hand behind your back...they just can't : blow their nose.

RE: Chronic rhinitis in my own dog

Thank you.
