She is eating less (but still eating). dental exam and dental rads NAD, HR and T4 WNL, both kidneys palpate

RE: Guinea pig weight loss

Thanks Marie,

The calcium was 2.81 and phosphorus 0.61, so I thought within normal limits. But ultrasound scan sizes were R kidney 3.07 cm and L 2.7...so both enlarged based on the range you give.

She's coming back in on Monday, so I'll try again to obtain a urine sample (failed miserably last week!!)...but I'm puzzled as to what could be causing enlarged kidneys, weight loss...but little renal changes on bloods...?

RE: Guinea pig weight loss

AST and LDH can increase with reduced renal clearance which may be relevant given the palpable renal changes but both enzymes are very non-specific. What were Ca and Phos? These tend to be more useful for assessment of renal compromise in small herbivores. Were kidney's enlarged? Length is variable (associated loosely with bodyweight) but 17-26mm is reported as a normal range. Urinalysis would be helpful - I tended to keep GPs in a plastic cage until a sample was passed or get owners to do this at home.
