Thanks for that. I had seen the bupivacaine maximum dose quoted at 2mg/kg which would allow upto 1.6ml of a 0.5% solution. The lignocaine cartridges I use are marked in 0.3ml increments so are relatively easy to gauge these sort of doses.

Do you tend to avoid adrenaline altogether? I do use lignocaine with adrenaline, though I would imagine it's less important if using bupivacaine.

bupivacaine only comes in plastic vials as Marcane. If you want glass vials order Scandonest but it’s a step down in efficacy to mepivacaice

I would urge caution using these as it is very difficult to determine volume of administration. Most cartridges are at least 1.7ml in volume. Safe doses of bupivacaine in cats are less than 1 mg/kg so for a 4kg cat you need to make sure it doesn't receive more than 0.8ml (of a 0.5% solution)_which can be very hard when you can';t measure how much you're giving, otherwise you risk systemic toxicity. Centaur lists Marcain, although looking at it I'm not convinced they're cartridges.

Thanks, Wren. The trade names I know of are Marcain and Vivicain, though there may be others. I usually order my dental consumables from Dental Directory, but they don't stock any. I will keep looking...

I order Scandonest (admittedly that's mepivacaine!) cartridges for mine from Centaur. If you know a brand name for bupivacaine you may well find your wholesaler will have them (or get them). Otherwise Dental Sky or one of the other dental supply companies should be able to sort you out.
