I am currently treating an 18 month old working cocker spaniel for this problem, it is causing a build up of very dry caseous looking material

RE: Dry prepucial mucosa in a castrated male dog.

Funnily enough I have been treating an elderly beagle with something very similar. Dried cheesy like secretion actually stuck on the penis which can be removed by swab. This dog also keeps looking at his side (originally suspected anal glands) and seems in a bit of discomfort. I have been applying KY gel which seems to help for a couple of weeks . Owner not that keen on further investigation at this point . I think he has been castrated for years .

RE: Dry prepucial mucosa in a castrated male dog.

Lanolin is great for keeping mucous membranes moist and slippery - used to be able to get something called orabase which would have worked well in the situation described.

As for the cause, I would wonder about possible immune mediated issues, especially in a spaniel - might be worth checking his Schirmer tear tests.... just a thought.

No harm in using fuciderm / isaderm for a week or two either , but if long term lubrication was needed vaseline is probably the best choice

RE: Dry prepucial mucosa in a castrated male dog.

Not the normal looking juvenille type smegma, more like the dried out crumbly cheesy type I would normally associated with horses. Yes prolapsed the penis, and yes owner cleaning daily. There is a complete lack of secretion from the membranes. Currently more comfy with the owner applying lubrication daily.

Some preputial "discharge" is normal in most male dogs, as you know I'm sure, usually trapped at the opening by hair so this may just be an excessive production?

I can't see how it's related to anything else??

Ps I think it used to be called smegma"??
