One a 7 year old Fox Terrier (neutered) plus a 3 year old smooth haired fox terrier (spayed). My problem is that if we let them off the lead on say a beach the female does nothing but yap in the males face which to us leaves him demented

RE: Advice please about our 2 dogs fighting!

I'd agree about getting a good behaviourist on board. They really do seem to work miracles with some dogs ... but it is always about looking at how the owner interacts with their pets as much as at the behaviour itself.

Get someone listed with the APBC.

Think of it as an investment in making the next 10 years with your dogs far more pleasurable.

RE: Advice please about our 2 dogs fighting!

If they were mine I would probably get a good behaviouralist (research carefully!) out to take a look. They can be quite good at giving insight into the dogs' relationship having observed them, which may be useful in developing a strategy for managing them. I feel someone really needs to observe your dogs in situ- in the house and on a walk- to understand the reasoning and hopefully get a solution.

I've told this story on here before, but I worked in kennels as a student, and we had in two rotties. We were told they co-existed very peacefully BUT one had to go back into the kennel before the other. All was fine for 3 weeks, then someone (not me !) put the wrong one in first and immediately all Hell broke loose! Took us 25 minutes and the fire hose to separate them! There is a definitely value to understanding the nature of the dogs' relationship!

RE: Advice please about our 2 dogs fighting!
Would something like squeezy cheese offered to distract them as tension mounts work, or are they not food-minded enough?
With terriers that's unlikely IMHO, most of them seem so fixated at the start of this sort of incident that nothing will distract them.

I definitely agree with the muzzling thing as a crisis management tactic, short-term but I'm sorry to say, Derek, that once this type of behaviour starts I don't believe there is much that can be done to correct it and it rarely ends well.
