We have no serum ketone meter and I have a cat I am suspicious of mild DKA.I have tested the serum on dipstick it is negative however I know it doesn't test for all forms of ketones (if that is the right terminology!). I remember from a CPD session

RE: Advise on serum ketone measurements using dipsticks

I would tend to agree.

If the serum ketones are not showing up on the dipstick then the ketoacidosis probably isn’t very severe.

A blood gas would be my next port of call if the animal seemed sick. That, and as MW suggests, get some urine.

I think michael's unfortunately correct that adding h2O2 is probably not a useful enough thing to do to bother.

RE: Advise on serum ketone measurements using dipsticks

Hello,

I have heard that you add hydrogen peroxide to the sample. No idea how much.

Thanks for info on blood machine last time checked was much more expensive, maybe a diff brand. Will defo ask relevant people again if can get one in. However I wanted to know today what levels were so was interested if other people had used this technique

RE: Advise on serum ketone measurements using dipsticks

Why?

If you have dipsticks, then squeeze the bladder or do a cysto and test urine.

If you want to do blood then the Freestyle Optium machine is cheap - look on ebay. The machines are £10-20 and strips less than £1/each if you buy in quantity.

The blood measures beta hydroxy buterate and urine is mainly acetoacetate I believe. Just use the right method on the right fluid.
