I know in the past some are temperamental, too sensitive, not sensitive enough, not accurate, too fiddly.
Not hideously expensive to buy from the US but a local supply would be good!

Our large machine uses some pretty expensive water traps which we sourced from Italy last time!
There's one less on ebay now, thanks for the heads up.

I don't care for a pulse ox, but capnography is so very useful. This will replace the old noisy capnograph in prep. I think I'm technically a 4 capnograph practice, thanks to Bob, if you count the old one that no longer works........

Have a multi-parameter monitor, but rarely connect up anything else, other than the temperature lead. ECG if very sick. Pulse ox just crap. The Broadbelt anaesthetic mortality study found pulse ox use increases risk of death........

RE: Best pulse-oximeter to buy?

We are now a two capnograph practice!!!

The eBay unit was too good to miss so for about £300 we have a handheld machine that does CO2 and O2. The monitor is tiny but it connects to a nearby PC using a supplied dongle.

Hows that for posh?!! Only missing the rechargeable AA batteries (£7).

I accept it does not have a guarantee but it is new. Please tell me your boss(es) are willing to take that sort of risk?

I honestly think a capnograph is worth it. I like side-stream with a nice big screen positioned so I can glance over merrily while prepping my hands or operating to be reassured that all is well. Admittedly mine was £800.

If you want something that you don't have, then figure out how much it would need to be charged per use for the boss to say yes (say paid off including monthly running costs in 6 months, excluding VAT and assuming no reduction in staff efficiency resulting). Then decide if it's worth it to you at that cost and folks would pay for it. Agree no charge for use on neutering procedures to ensure nurse familiarity. Agree that half of further approximate profits from its use will go towards your next piece of whatever if you think there will be plenty of surplus for less economically self-sustaining requests, or that the price per use will drop once paid off to allow you to use on all your cases.

RE: Best pulse-oximeter to buy?

Does anyone have any experience with the new mini-capnograph (from Vet Direct I think) that as far as I can see just goes into the circuit near the patient?

For about the same there are other models listed from time to time.

You can go for a Chinese new machine. Expect to pay VAT but probably not duty which as far as I am aware about is reclaimable. We bought a lab analyser from the States and could claim the VAT back with paperwork from the delivery company.

Obviously eBay items come with an element of risk!
