Just wondering about opinions on the Vet-tome? I have been tasked at looking into whether it would be beneficial for our practice or not. I have been on wetlab CPD for surgical extractions which were great and I'm pretty comfortable for the

RE: Any general practitioners out there using the Vet-tome?

Hi ,

I have a Vet Tome and I like it but I agree with some of the responders in this thread that there is a learning curve, and it is difficult to get experienced vets to use the new piece of equipment as they already know how to deal with complex extractions using the rest of our IM3 equipment. I do think it is a valuable addition though. When used correctly it is less invasive than burring out bone on delicate mandibles and maxillae. I agree it is best for canines in my hands, but I am certainly no expert.

Fractured teeth with endodontic disease generally get endodontic treatment (mostly); in the perio case, yes, but generally the other root does seem to come more easily even though it appears perfectly sound.

It coincided with a cadaver course we were running. A local implant dentist came to use it and was impressed but subsequent wet labs taken by one of us in the USA showed it to be quite limited - good for incisors and possibly canines but most multi-rooted teeth still need flaps.
Will it save time and spare bone? Maybe in some cases but it's a lot of money for an extra piece of kit that for most vets won't replace what they already do
Supply also seems very limited. I think we are still on a waiting list. Given I first saw this at a meeting in 2015 I'm not sure what the problem is.

RE: Any general practitioners out there using the Vet-tome?

I've no direct experience of it, but in theory should be atraumatic if used properly. You would then need to decide whether to raise a flap to close your extraction site, after extracting a large tooth such as a dog canine- which would be preferable. I met a GP on a course I was teaching last week, who has it for mostly feline work, and says it's brilliant.

In my mind money should first be spent on practical CPD courses to get the skills to be quick and atraumatic.

Now I'm still havering.

It would save some time and some trauma on extracting a canine tooth in a dog. That might be worth the price of over two thousand pounds. I am not sure what other teeth it would be helpful for. Maybe a dog's upper 8 or lower 9 sometimes – but how often does one extract those if they are not so diseased as to make extraction easy anyway?
