After getting the rads checked by an Ortopaedic Surgeon, and given that there is not involvement of the major joints, it seems that my suspicion about autoimmune arthritis was wrong. Still treating for osteomyelits, although on preds, and waiting a bit longer before I amputate the floppy digit (5 hind) as it is getting cought (and developed a seroma) during Seth's long walks in the fields

I have a case in a 9 year old male English Springer Spaniel who after extensive work-up by us was referred to the AHT and was diagnosed by MRI with Masticatory and Periorbital Myositis, Responded well to immunosupressive dosed of prednisolone and was weaned off them after about 6 months. Only a couple of months later the symptoms re-occurred and responded well again to preds. To make it more complicated now, after deciding not to stop the gluococoticoids alltogrether, but mantaining anti-inflammatrory doses, he presented a few weeks ago with what seemed to be a typical grass seed in an intierdigital space.Trying to fish it little pieces of bones came in the forceps,and an x-ray showed a total destruction/fracture at the inter phalangeal joint. X-rays of other paws showed very abnormal changes in carpal and phalangeal joints. Osteomyelitis doses of clindamycin were given and the soft tissue infection subsided, but after taking the x-rays and seing other limbs(paws) affected I am worried about the posibility of an Autoimmune Arthritis concurrent to the myositis. Theis dog though seems at the moment happy in himself and it is not lame.

With videos, I recommend you set yourself up with a youtube account, upload your video there, and then 'embed' the video on VetSurgeon (either in the gallery, or you can do it in the forum too). If your video takes too long to upload to youtube, you need to shorten or compress it. If you need help doing that, you can either email me the video (provided it is less than 10MB), or post it to me on a CD, and I'll do it all for you. I suspect that posting it to me is probably too much hassle, but the offer is there.

i've tried to upload a small video but it takes to much time to upload.

it's a very interesting case . he's on steroids at the moment.

wanted to do more tests: biopsy and blood test but as always the only problem was "no money"

You can also run an antibody test, which is less invasive. It's +ve early on in the disease but levels fall off again as the disesae progresses and the muscle is replaced with fibrous scar tissue

Could you possibly send us a picture of your patient?

If you are sure of the diagnosis (muscle biopsy is not a bad idea) then the treatment is a corticosteroid at the "immunosuppressive" dose. It may not work.

yep that MMM. It's a five years old Dobermann who looks like 2 different dogs glued together by neck
