The owner thinks he's stood on a nail or piece of wood. I'm a mixed practice vet but this is a bit out of the ordinary for me!
Any tips for catching, handling and examining? Any suggestions for possible meds

RE: Emu help!

Thank you all especially Bob for a good giggle....

Well I saw the emu, ironically called Spike, who was thought to have stood on a nail. He had actually improved quite a bit and was known to be quite feisty so I didn't risk getting too hands on! Did prescribe amoxy-clav and meloxicam though as he was lame and the foot was swollen. Have offered to GA next week if not improving further....

RE: Emu help!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxAFdTCkQS0

RE: Emu help!

[quote user="Marie Kubiak"]

Side is best! They are set up to kick forward but can kick still backwards with a shorter range when restrained. And are unpredictable when flailing!

I'm even scared of them at the zoo, their beady eyes give me the fear! Yes, I'm very wary of getting kicked - I'm getting married in 3 weeks and I don't think my fiancé would be too impressed!

I seem to remember they kick forwards though, so safest to stand behind??

RE: Emu help!

Don't get kicked! They look nice and calm when someone is sitting on them and squashing them but can suddenly kick like a mule. Best to get a good look at legs before restraint then get the owner to jump on them and pull them down so you can see the underside of the foot but stay wary.

No common lameness causes specific to emu but bacterial arthritis and trauma are most common in larger birds. Meloxicam dose I've used is 0.2mg/kg sid, amoxy-clav 25-50mg/kg
