I have two 8 week old hand reared orphan fox cubs booked in for vaccinations tomorrow. I'm guessing the main concern is distemper, the vaccinations we use at

RE: Vaccinating pet foxes

only pet fox I have seen was vaccinated to my knowledge with DHP (unsure of brand), apparently to protect against distemper.

I considered that it would be pretty bad luck for the now-domesticated fox to get distemper seeing as I had never seen a case in a domesticated dog in the area, but I obviously kept my thoughts to myself.

Skeptic as I was, I must be fair and say that it was a considerably better mannered, and apparently more adapted to domestication, pet than many dogs I have seen, in spite of doing numerous visits with schoolchildren etc, and at the grand age of 12, it was yet to bite anyone for instance.

I still wouldn't personally ever advocate hand rearing an orphaned fox cub with the intention of keeping it as a pet, however.

RE: Vaccinating pet foxes

I had a pet fox. I vaccinated him at 10 and 12 weeks with whatever distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis vaccine we used then. He got "blue eye" (who remembers that?) and also some fairly severe distemper-like symptoms, from which he recovered.

He remained friendly but the odour was piercing – to everybody but me.

RE: Vaccinating pet foxes

Sorry, can't help with the vaccination info.

I assume the new 'owners' are aware of the implications of trying to keep foxes as pets? They generally don't stay friendly .... aside from the fact they are on shaky ground as far as the law is concerned.
